Songwriting for Kids: Listening Room
Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary
I had so much fun visiting the 5th graders of Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary as part of their Civil War studies. We talked about the new "American music" that began to develop on the battlefield, home front, and cotton fields. Some of the 5th graders worked together to create this great rallying cry for the state of Maine. Hurrah!
VERSE 1
We are an independent state and native to the land
Our towering pines and salty spray and beaches of vast sand
In 1820 our line with Mass was severed
Hurrah for our differences that always fit together
CHORUS
Hurrah, hurrah, for lovely Maine, hurrah!
Hurrah for our differences that always fit together
VERSE 2
In the winter, we go sledding in the silky snow
And in the summer people like to get in boats and row
When the air gets cooler, the leaves begin to color
Hurrah for our differences that always fit together
VERSE 3
Our seas are full of lobster and our woods are full of moose
Squirrels, and birds, and other things run so free and loose
The clouds that hang in our sky are softer than a feather
Hurrah for our differences that always fit together
VERSE 4
After all our learning, we finally get vacation
Then we have to go back and get an education
Our community is bully free and everyone’s themselves
Hurrah for our differences that always fit together
VERSE 5
As you can see, we Mainers carry lots of pride
While we kayak home upon the rising tide
Maine will give you memories to stick with you forever
Hurrah for our differences that always fit together
